Friends of Fort Knox welcomes volunteers of all kinds! Below are job descriptions of positions that are always needed! 

 Interpretive Guide/Docent

Description:  This is a public education position informing visitors to Fort Knox about the Fort and general history of the Penobscot River Valley. Work includes guiding visitors on walking tours and answering questions about the Friends of Fort Knox, special events, local attractions and businesses.

 

Friends of Fort Knox will provide a tour guide manual that covers the important elements of Fort history and will provide on-the-job training. Each docent has their own specific field of interest and is encouraged to share their knowledge.

  • Greet visitors and invite on a tour

  • Provide guided tours

  • Operate two-way radio in order to contact support staff

 

 Gift Shop Staff

Description:  This position sells gifts and souvenirs related to Fort Knox, the Civil War and Maine. May includes answering questions about the Friends of Fort Knox, the history of the Fort, special events, local attractions and businesses.

  • Assist Gift Shop staff

  • Process cash and credit card transactions

  • Help fold T-shirts and keep stock in good order

  • Price stock and replace stock as needed

Park Operations Staff

July 2023

Job description: Operations Staff are responsible for daily operations and maintenance of Fort Knox Historic Site and Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory. Ability to learn and demonstrate proficiency in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Emergency Operating plans; Engage the public effectively, Follow oral and written instructions, Drive a golf cart and patrol the park, Enforce park rules and regulations with firmness and tact to ensure the safety of the environment, facilities, and park users; Utilize a variety of tools to maintain buildings, picnic tables, grounds, roads, trails, restrooms and waters systems; Become familiar with park rules, policies and emergency plans; Respond to emergency situations that may arise; Become cross trained and provide breaks in other park staff positions (Gift Shop, Gate, Observatory) as needed; Must be at least 18 years of age and physically able to successfully complete required training and perform all the duties described.

Job Types: Part-time, Seasonal

Salary: From $17.00 per hour

Observatory Attendant

July 2023

Job descriptionObservatory Attendants will work with FOFK and Fort Knox staff to greet visitors to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, collect observatory tickets, and guide visitors safely through their observatory experience. This job requires strong, positive hospitality skills and the ability to learn and relate important information about Fort Knox history, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, and the many resources of the Penobscot Bay area. Observatory Attendants must also be able to learn and demonstrate proficiency in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Emergency Operating plans. Observatory Attendants shall be at least 18 years of age, must be physically able to perform all the duties described for Observatory Attendants below, and shall be physically able to successfully complete required training.

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Salary: $15.55 per hour
